Lighting

The main types of lighting used in homes are ambient, task, and accent lighting. Ambient lighting provides general illumination for a room and includes fixtures like ceiling lights, chandeliers, and floor lamps. Task lighting is focused on specific areas for activities such as reading or cooking and includes desk lamps, under-cabinet lights, and pendant lights. Accent lighting highlights particular features or decorations, such as spotlights, wall sconces, and track lighting.

Choosing the right light bulb involves considering the bulb's base type, wattage, brightness (measured in lumens), and colour temperature. Ensure the bulb base matches the socket of your fixture. Check the fixture's maximum wattage rating to avoid overheating. For brightness, select a bulb with the desired lumens, and for ambiance, choose a colour temperature measured in Kelvins (K). Warm light (2700K-3000K) is cozy, while cool light (4000K-5000K) is energising.

Improve energy efficiency by switching to LED bulbs, which use less power and last longer. Utilise natural light during the day by opening curtains and blinds. Install dimmer switches to adjust lighting levels and save energy. Use motion sensors or timers for outdoor and occasionally used lights. Additionally, choose fixtures with higher efficacy (lumens per watt) and consider integrating smart lighting systems for better control and efficiency.
